About this property

Featured in AD, Travel + Leisure, Galerie, and Surface Magazine, The Seminary is a boutique hotel from Place in Mind. Built in 1829, it was restored and designed by renowned architecture and interior design firm Hendricks Churchill (Elle Décor A-List). Sleeps 10 in 5 ensuite bedrooms, it is a true design piece, with vintage furnishings, original art, fireplace, baby grand piano, chef's kitchen, and furnished garden patio.

Welcome to The Seminary, an 1829 historic landmark in the heart of Old Bennington, Vermont, and the debut property from Place in Mind, a new preservation-first hospitality brand founded by Rafe Churchill and Casey Sunderland of the celebrated design studio Hendricks Churchill. It has been featured in Architectural Digest, Travel + Leisure, Surface, and Galerie, among many others.

Built as a seminary, it went on to serve as a country club, then as faculty housing for nearby Bennington College, and finally as a private home cared for by the same family for some six decades. Today, The Seminary is a private boutique retreat sleeping ten guests across five en-suite bedrooms.

The restoration touched every inch of the house, subtly and thoughtfully. Original floorboards were refinished, historic millwork carefully restored and matched, and long-hidden architectural details uncovered. The house is furnished entirely with vintage pieces selected by designer Heide Hendricks, along with original artwork sourced at auction. Paint colors draw on the history of the building and the region. The result is something between a design-forward boutique hotel and a beloved family home, full of character, curiosity, and comfort.

The restored colonial façade features a reproduction bell tower rising from the wood roofline, and the front driveway has parking for up to eight cars. Inside, the entry hall opens to a staircase leading up to the five bedrooms.

The living room is the main gathering space, with a large wood-burning fireplace (firewood is stacked just outside the kitchen), a vintage HiFi stereo, and a baby grand piano. Vintage sofas and armchairs invite long conversations and lazy afternoons with a book, and a Smart TV is ready for streaming in the den when the day winds down. A powder room off the entry hall keeps things easy for guests coming and going.

The kitchen is made for cooking together and for feeding a group. A KitchenAid smart double wall oven with true convection sits alongside a cooktop, a full-depth KitchenAid refrigerator with an ice maker, and a KitchenAid third-rack dishwasher for easy cleanup after a big dinner. A Zephyr beverage cooler keeps wine, beer, and sparkling water chilled. Mornings start with freshly ground coffee or a Nespresso, with an electric kettle for tea and a toaster close at hand. The kitchen is fully stocked with cookware, knives, bakeware, and every tool you'll need, plus a complete set of dinnerware and glassware, from wine and rocks glasses to highballs and a pitcher for lemonade or cocktails. Salt, pepper, cooking oil, basic spices, sugar, tea, and coffee pods are provided to get you started, and a pantry sits just off the downstairs hallway.

Each of the five original bedrooms is equipped with Bellino Italian linens and have private bathrooms with Kassatex towels and robes. Two bedrooms offer a king bed, two a queen, and the fifth a full, each uniquely furnished.

An upstairs laundry room includes a GE smart front-load washer and two dryers. Throughout the house you'll find central air conditioning for warm summer days, classic steam radiator heat for the colder months, Ecobee smart thermostats on both floors, high-speed Wi-Fi, and laptop-friendly workspaces. Hair dryers and a garment steamer are provided, and extra blankets are tucked away in the pantry for cooler nights.

Outside, you're in one of New England's most storied villages. The Bennington Battle Monument, The Bennington Museum, and Old First Church, where Robert Frost is laid to rest, are all a short walk from the front door. Downtown Bennington, with its galleries, cafés, and breweries, is a five-minute drive, and the covered bridges of North Bennington and the campus of Bennington College are just beyond. In every season, the Green Mountains, the Berkshires, and some of Vermont's best skiing are within easy reach.

The Seminary is an inspiring setting for family gatherings, creative retreats, long weekends with friends, and design lovers who want to experience a truly one-of-a-kind piece of American architecture. Please note this home is not suited for children, and pets are not permitted. We can't wait to welcome you.

The area

The Seminary sits in Old Bennington, a nationally designated historic village of white clapboard homes and storied landmarks. Walk to the Bennington Battle Monument, Vermont's tallest structure, the Old First Church, where Robert Frost is buried, or The Bennington Museum, home to the largest public collection of Grandma Moses paintings. Tour the three covered bridges and the Park- McCullough House in North Bennington, then dine at Pangaea. Grab pastries at Power’s Market, bagels at Bennington Bagel Co., and a pint at Madison Brewing Co. downtown. Hike Mount Anthony or swim at Lake Paran and Lake Shaftsbury State Park. Williamstown's Clark Art Institute is 20 minutes south, MASS MoCA in North Adams is 30 minutes, and Manchester's charming shops and Hildene (the Lincoln family estate) are 35 minutes north. In winter, ski Bromley (45 minutes), Mount Snow (50 minutes), or Stratton (55 minutes), or cross-country ski at Prospect Mountain. Fall foliage, summer lakes, and snowy slopes make Bennington a destination in every season.

The Seminary is 3 hours north of New York City, 3 hours from Boston, and 2 hours north of Hartford, CT. The main access routes are I-90E to NY-22N and MA-2E to VT-9W. In winter, we recommend a four-wheel-drive vehicle for snowy and gravel roads.
