About this property

Barclay House is a 1910 Renaissance Revival villa on two secluded acres in the Village of Saugerties, under two hours from Manhattan. Six bedrooms and 3.5 baths sleep twelve across two kings, three queens, and a room with two full beds. Inside features a curved staircase, a chef's kitchen, and stunning arched French doors. Outside find the heated salt water pool, bluestone patio, a fire pit, and garden paths to a koi pond.

Nearby towns: Woodstock (15 mins), Kingston (20 mins), Hudson (30 mins)

Barclay House is a 1910 Renaissance Revival brick villa set on two secluded acres at the edge of Saugerties village, just a 2-3 minute drive to the downtown main street. Originally built for a sea captain and still carrying every bit of that charm. At 5,315 square feet, with six bedrooms and room for twelve guests, this is a house with the scale of a European estate but the ease of a Hudson Valley summer home. You'll feel the grandeur of this historic home from the moment that the manicured trees welcome you down the drive.

Inside, a grand curved staircase rises from the entry, and original craftsmanship is everywhere you look: plaster walls, rich woodwork, a Juliet balcony overlooking the entry hall, and floor to ceiling arched French doors that run the whole way around the house. The rooms are spacious in a way that modern homes simply are not. Two gorgeous fireplaces anchor the den and the great room, and because nearly every room opens to the outdoors, light moves through the house from the sunrise to the evening glow across the river. Twelve people can spread out here into card games, conversation, and quiet corners without anyone feeling underfoot.

The kitchen is set up for a group that actually cooks. You will find an oven and cooktop, dishwasher, microwave, toaster, kettle, blender, an espresso machine, and a Keurig for the early risers, along with a full run of cooking tools and utensils to whip up anything you can dream of.

Six bedrooms sleep twelve, all in proper beds on the second and third floors. There are two king rooms, three queens, and a sixth room with two full beds, comfortable for children or for friends traveling together. Three full bathrooms serve the bedrooms and a powder room keeps the main floor easy for guests, with the washer and dryer downstairs.

Outside is where Barclay House becomes something rare. Wide verandas wrap the house and open onto a flower-draped terrace and an expansive bluestone patio, with shaded seating scattered across the grounds for long dinners, slow mornings, and everything between. The heated salt water pool is framed by mature landscaping, creating a private poolside escape, a propane grill handles the cooking, and a fire pit carries the evening past sunset. Beyond the lawn, antique bluestone paths wind down through the trees to a koi pond reached by stone steps, the kind of hidden corner guests stumble onto once and return to every day of the stay. This is a house that turns a few days away into an occasion. Some houses are where you stay, and some are the reason you went, and Barclay House is firmly the second. We can't wait to welcome you.

The area

Saugerties sits where the Esopus Creek meets the Hudson, a village with a real Main Street and one of the most walkable downtowns in the valley. Partition and Main hold antique shops, galleries, Inquiring Minds Bookstore and Coffee House, and Krause's Chocolates, with Miss Lucy's Kitchen, the Dutch Ale House, Rock Da Pasta, and the tavern at Diamond Mills all minutes from the door. The Saugerties Lighthouse is a half mile walk through tidal marsh to the river, and Falling Waters Preserve and Esopus Bend Nature Preserve keep quiet trails closer in. Opus 40, Harvey Fite's bluestone sculpture park, is ten minutes out and hosts concerts through the summer. Woodstock is fifteen minutes west, Kingston's Stockade District twenty minutes south, and Hudson about thirty minutes north. Kaaterskill Falls and North-South Lake sit a half hour into the Catskills, with skiing at Hunter, Windham, and Belleayre in winter, so the area rewards a visit in every season.

Barclay House is just under two hours from New York City, and guests will want a car to get there and around the area.
In the winter, we recommend a car with four-wheel drive that can handle snow and gravel roads.

Notes from your host

The home does not have central ac but there are window or standing units in 5 of the bedrooms. One of the attic rooms does not have anything.

The two fireplaces are currently not able to be used.

The pool will be open from Memorial Day weekend to Labor day weekend.

“This place was AMAZING. When I walked in I felt like I was in a scene from Gone With the Wind with a modern updated twist yet they still kept the charm of the era. The grounds were beautiful and close to the downtown area. I can not say enough for this place. Definitely two thumbs up.”
