About this property
Second-floor one-bedroom at Sugar Beach Resort, renovated, sleeps four. King bed, sofa bed in the living room, full kitchen, in-unit laundry, and central air conditioning throughout. Ocean views from the lanai, the living room, and the dining table.
The sand is a short walk across the lawn. Humpbacks calve in Maalaea Bay from November through April and you can watch them from your chair. Kahului airport is 20 minutes north, Maalaea Harbor 5 minutes west.
The lanai is the room you'll use most. It's covered, it's deep enough to stay dry in a passing shower, and it faces the water — pool and hot tub directly below, lawn and palms beyond that, then open ocean with Kahoʻolawe and Lanai out on the horizon. Seating for two and a table. Sunset is straight ahead, every night.
Inside, the slider opens the living room right onto it, and a second picture window by the dining table gives you a separate line on the water — so you're looking at ocean from the couch, the table, and the lanai. The unit has been renovated: wood-look plank flooring throughout with no carpet, white coastal finishes, a glass dining table that seats four.
The bedroom has a king bed, nightstands with reading lamps, a dresser, and a full closet. The bathroom opens off it, with an updated vanity.
Central air conditioning runs through the whole unit on ceiling vents, not a window unit in the bedroom. It makes a difference in late summer, when North Kihei gets warm.
The kitchen is full-size and set up to actually cook in. There's a washer and dryer in the unit, which you'll use more than you'd think on a beach stay. Wi-Fi is reliable for streaming or a workday.
The sofa bed in the living room sleeps two more, so there's room for a family with kids or for two couples traveling together.
The area
North Kihei is the quiet end of the coast. You're at the top of Maalaea Bay, where the beach runs unbroken for miles in both directions and the crowds thin out within a few minutes' walk. Mornings are outrigger canoes going by offshore. Afternoons are wind on the water. Evenings, the sun goes down straight off the beach.
Directly across the road is Kealia Pond National Wildlife Refuge — a boardwalk over the wetlands where Hawaiian stilts, coots, and migrating shorebirds feed. Ten minutes of your morning, and most visitors drive past without knowing it's there.
Five minutes west is Maalaea Harbor, where the Molokini snorkel boats and the whale-watch catamarans leave from. You'll be glad of that on the morning of a 7 a.m. departure.
South of you the whole Kihei and Wailea coastline opens up — Kalama Park, the Kamaole beaches, the Wailea beach path, Makena at the end. Restaurants, grocery stores, and the farmers market are all within a ten-minute drive down South Kihei Road.
From November through April, Maalaea Bay is a humpback nursery. You'll see them from the sand, from the pool deck, and from the lanai.
Rent a car. Maui rewards it, and North Kihei is a good launch point in every direction.
Drive times from the front door:
Kahului Airport (OGG) — 15 minutes
Maalaea Harbor — 10 minutes
South Kihei restaurants and shops — 10 minutes
Wailea — 20 minutes
Paia and the start of the Road to Hana — about 30 minutes
Haleakala summit — about 2 hours
Parking is in the resort's open garage.
