About this property

The Waterfall House is a stunning modern chalet beside a private waterfall and creek in Elka Park, NY. Sleeps 8 in 4 bedrooms with 2 baths, plus 20-ft windows, a wood stove, a jetted soaking tub, a media lounge with projector and record player, and deck with fire pit and grill. Totally private, but minutes from skiing at Hunter and Windham, and world class hiking.

Nearby towns: Tannersville (10mins), Hunter (15mins), Palenville (25mins), Woodstock (25mins), Saugerties (25mins), Windham (30mins)

The Waterfall House is a spacious modern chalet with four bedrooms and two baths, set beside its own private waterfall and creek in Elka Park, New York, at the edge of thousands of acres of protected forest in the Catskill Mountains.

The house is oriented toward the falls, so the experience starts the moment you arrive, with the sound of rushing water filling your ears, and swirling mist setting the tone. Stairs lead up to a large glass-railed deck and through sliding doors into the main living level, where rich wood beams and floor-to-ceiling windows reaching 20 feet frame the forest and fill the room with light. A wood-burning stove and mantle, a Chesterfield sofa, and an Eames chair offer comfortable and stylish seating, and the sound of the waterfall carries through the house.

The open kitchen is made for cooking together, with a central island, a five-burner propane range, a Samsung refrigerator, and a dishwasher. It comes well stocked with everything you might need for cooking and hosting your group. The dining table seats six, steps from the deck for meals with a view.

The home is laid out across two distinct levels, which makes it a natural fit for families or two couples traveling together. On the main level, two large bedrooms each have a king bed, and they share a full bathroom with an oversized jetted soaking tub that looks out over the forest and creek.

A spiral staircase leads down to the lower level, a space of its own for movie nights and late evenings. The entertainment room has an Epson projector with Denon surround sound, a record player and curated vinyl collection, board games, and several seating areas to spread out. Two more bedrooms sit on this level, one with a king bed and a love seat and the other with a queen bed and a large work desk for remote days, along with a second full bathroom with a spacious open tiled shower.

Outside, the oversized deck is set up for long evenings in the mountains, with a propane fire pit, Adirondack chairs, an outdoor dining table, and a propane grill with a smoker. A path leads from the house to the waterfall, where the creek and the surrounding forest make the property feel like a private preserve.

Tannersville is about ten minutes away, Hunter Mountain is a short drive, and Kaaterskill Falls, North-South Lake, and Woodstock are all within easy reach. The Waterfall House is a rare, design-forward mountain escape, and the private waterfall makes this a unique property for miles around.

The area

The Waterfall House sits in Elka Park, about 10 minutes from the shops, cafés, and restaurants along Main Street in Tannersville.

In winter, ski and ride at Hunter Mountain, about 15 minutes away, or head to Windham Mountain for another day on the slopes. In warmer months, ride the Hunter Mountain Skyride for views across the Catskills, or explore the surrounding mountains for world class hiking and biking.

Hikers can take the trail to Kaaterskill Falls, explore Platte Clove Preserve, or spend a day swimming and paddling at North-South Lake. The drive down Route 23A through Kaaterskill Clove is worth the trip on its own, and leads you to the Hudson Valley towns of Saugerties, Catskill and Kingston.

In Tannersville and Hunter, be sure to check out The Shandaken Bake, Lucky Catskills, Fellow Cafe, Prospect Scribner, and the restaurant at Hotel Lillien or Deer Mountain Inn!

The Waterfall House is about 2.5 hours from New York City. A car is essential for getting here and exploring the area. The main access routes are the New York State Thruway (I-87) and Route 23A. The driveway is long and gravel, so we strongly recommend a 4x4 or a car with four-wheel drive. This is required during winter.

Notes from your host

Exploring the waterfall and swimming in the creek are at your own risk, so please use caution near the water. Parking is available for three cars. Pets are not permitted. This is bear country, so please use the bear-proof bins for garbage in the warmer months and keep all food indoors. The owner’s closet and supply room are locked and not available to guests.

“As it was described, the waterfall behind the house is breath takingly beautiful and private. We enjoyed the quietness in the wood and the decoration inside the house is thoughtful with good taste. Host’s team is very responsive and answered Patiently every questions whenever we asked 24/7. They put much effort in to making sure we have a great experience at the house. Home theater with a projector and Danon stereo is very nice. Beds are very comfortable. WiFi is good. Local restaurants recommendations were all excellent. We might come back again!”
