The area

The cottage enjoys a wonderfully convenient location, with a village shop right next door and two popular pubs nearby, making it easy to pick up essentials, enjoy a leisurely lunch, or settle in for an evening meal just moments from your doorstep.

Nestled in the rolling countryside of North Devon, Dolton is a charming and peaceful village full of rural character, just minutes from the historic market town of Torrington, with its independent shops, scenic walks and renowned Plough Arts Centre. Surrounded by green fields, winding lanes, and scenic farmland, it offers a true escape from the pace of everyday life. The village itself has a welcoming community feel, with traditional cottages, a parish church, and a handful of local amenities that add to its appeal.

Nearby, discover the spectacular RHS Rosemoor Gardens, the picturesque fishing village of Appledore, and the sandy beaches of Westward Ho! and Northam Burrows. For memorable days out, explore the dramatic landscapes of Dartmoor and Exmoor National Parks, or visit the stunning coastal scenery of Lynton, Lynmouth and the Valley of Rocks.

Steeped in history, Dolton retains much of its old-world charm while providing a relaxing base for exploring the wider Devon countryside. It’s ideally located for enjoying nearby walking routes, cycling trails, and picturesque drives through the region’s natural beauty. Guests can also venture further afield to discover the dramatic landscapes of Exmoor or the stunning North Devon coastline.

Transport around Dolton is best suited to those travelling by car, allowing guests to fully explore the surrounding countryside and nearby attractions at their own pace. The village is set within a rural area, with quiet country lanes connecting it to neighbouring towns and villages, making driving the most convenient option for getting around.

There are also plenty of opportunities for guests to walk and explore both the village of Dolton and the surrounding countryside.

While public transport is more limited, there are local bus services linking Dolton to nearby towns such as Great Torrington and Barnstaple, where a wider range of shops, restaurants, and amenities can be found. From Barnstaple, visitors can access further transport connections, including regular bus routes across North Devon.

For rail travel, the nearest train station is in Barnstaple, offering services to Exeter and connections to the wider UK rail network. Exeter also provides access to major road links, making it ideal for guests looking to make day trips during their stay.
