Lovely cottage right in the heart of Staithes. Outside seating area was nice for a morning coffee. Loved our stay. Only downside was neither of my 2 daughters wanted the single bedroom, and to be honest i can understand why as theres no cupboards or storage for clothes just a single solitary bed and bedside table. The room is large enough for a double bed and wardrobe. It would be fantastic if this was changed to accommodate that.

What a beautiful town and fantastic location! Ship's Bell is very quaint and characterful, clean and comfortable (great beds!). We had a few issues so can't leave a perfect review. We arrived to find the washing machine was broken - not ideal as a family of four arriving from five days of camping with no clean clothing left. After a couple of days someone came to collect our laundry (thank you!), but not until I'd done some handwashing in the bathtub. I appreciate that things break, but the broken washing machine had been noted in the cottage maintenance book by a previous guest a month before our stay. The broken shower had also been noted and had not been repaired. The maintenance team sent to repair it during our stay did not arrive. The kitchen is very dark, to the point where it is bordering on dangerous to be cooking. We brought down the bedroom reading lights. Strongly recommend improving the lighting in the kitchen! A bit of maintenance and this place would be a 10/10!

Positive: Fantastic property, so lucky to have found such a hidden gem for Easter. Lovely location, next to the beck and the beach and only minutes from all Staithes has to offer.
Lovely comfortable bedrooms, very clean on arrival, well stocked kitchen and fantastic bathrooms, a real fusion of tradition and modern and enjoyed by our family and dogs.
Great WiFi, lovely fire and selection of games or smart TV options. Comfy bedding, warm and inviting and we absolutely loved it.
Top tip is to use the coastal path to get to and from the carpark, much more scenic and manageable than the steep road and you get to see some of the illusion trail and the boat house, steps are up by the museum.
Loved talking the dogs to the beach in the morning, found some wonderful fossils and unusual shells.
Negative: Perhaps we've been spoiled in the past but I think welcome baskets are customary now in holiday let's and the logs provided were minimal. The shop had shut by the time we got to check in so either an option of paying for logs and kindling etc would be helpful.
Parking was around £40 for four nights which have unlimited use of the carpark at the top of the road. We managed to drop off and pick up during a very busy bank holiday weekend and it is part of the staithes experience!

Lovely stay at the Ship’s Bell cottage.
Well equipped and great to have the two bathroom for 4 adults. One of the showers was not working but the bath in that room was very nice. Low ceilings to be expected in a character cottage, just to be kept in mind if you have two 6 footers staying as we did. ;)
Great location close to all of Staithes amenities and for exploring the East coast. We ate at the cod and lobster on Sunday which was good value for money and lots of fish dishes as the name suggests. Added bonus of a RNLI brass band playing on the Saturday night which gave the harbour a lively atmosphere. Beds were super comfy! All in all a great stay and we would recommend.

Excellent stay at the ships bell which is in a central location so convenient for lunch at Dotty’s Tearoom, coffee from cobbles or a drink and dinner at the cod & lobster.
The accommodation is extremely spacious with 2 good sized bathrooms. All amenities catered for from kitchen utensils to a golf umbrella for the unpredictable weather.
Great communication including a guest handbook both in the house itself & also online.
Looking forward to another stay at the ships bell to continue our walks along the Cleveland way.

Loved Staithes, the cottage us in a good place but would have been better if we’d had some heating.
Positive: The beds were very comfortable and the kitchen was well equipped.
Negative: The central heating broke down half way through our stay, it was very cold, two electricians came but didn’t solve the problem. There was a wood burning stove, but no fuel provided.
It wouldn’t be any good for people with poor mobility as it’s on four floors with steep stair, also the kitchen ceiling is very low.

Staithes is a beautiful place, the location in the village is perfect. Space wise ideal for 4 adults. The ceiling height in the kitchen is very low, ok if your under 5ft 7. Comfy beds and log burner

Great Weekend Away in Staithes
Positive: Great Location in centre of Staithes, easy to find, cute 3 storey house, comfortable beds, great bathrooms, suited our girls weekend perfectly...
Negative: Ceiling is low in kitchen but to be expected in property of that age, but didn't affect out stay!

Positive: Good location with comfortable bedrooms. Great if you just need a place to crash in town. Great downstairs shower with heated floors.
Negative: The kitchen has what you need but ceiling is so low that it is barely usable for anyone over 5ft tall and poorly lit. Plus you have to switch the electrics between the boiler and the cooker so can't cook if someone using shower or bath. Property fine if you need minimal kitchen access but a challenge if you have young children with you.

Lovely cottage full of character. Comfortable beds and powerful shower.

Great location and great size place! Ceilings in the kitchen are very low, so if you're very tall be careful. Bathrooms were great for this price band place in Staithes and beds were exceptionally comfortable! Perfect base for a weekend exploring

Great location
Positive: We loved the location and the fact it had 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms
Negative: The pictures make it look like a really bright place but it's quite dark and the kitchen is in the basement. It's a small thing but there were no place mats and we didn't want to stain the beautiful table so we ended up using newspapers to put our plates and cups on.

Overall the property suited our needs with a dog friendly feel, comfy beds and good working showers.
However, there were definitely things that added a little down to the overall feel.
The amenities listing was incorrect no tumble dryer, the fridge and freezer were not individual but a small fridge with a broken freezer compartment. Very little cleaning produce and body/hair wash was offered yet was listed as supplied.
The washing machine broke the door of it integral space and was unusable. Maintenance attended to fix it, however this did not work. We had packed accordingly think we had use of a washing machine and dryer.
I had noticed other mention the low kitchen ceiling, I feel it should be more apparent in the listing, I appreciate these houses are fishermans cottages but only I could stand near the sink I am 5’6.
I think the property could benefit from a little overview of the listing and amenity’s list. I feel it was overpriced with this in mind.

Great location and fully equipped.

Cosy cottage with a quirky layout. The location is just off the Main Street and very handy, note that parking is tricky so best to offload and park in the public carpark at the top of the (steep) hill - charges apply. We found the cottage very comfortable for four of us and extremely well equipped and very clean. The kitchen is unusual in that it is in the former cellar. By its nature the cottage is small but very well planned and we found it very clean and comfortable. If I was being picky I would say that the only flaws are that the table in the kitchen is a bit big for the space available and some of the windows can’t be kept open without a wedge, but these are minor issues. We had a really nice weekend here and could have stayed longer.
GuestAirbnbAug 2026
The property is just off the high street so ideally situated. The stairs wouldn’t be good for anyone with any mobility issues and the kitchen unusable for anyone over 5 10 due to the basement height.

Avoid.
The kitchen had an offensive black mould smell for the entire stay. The fridge did not work, and the bathroom was leaking.
These issues were reported on the first night, and subsequent evenings which I feel were not addressed.
The realtor repeatedly requested pictures or movies despite advising them that the patterned tiles would not show the water damage, and that I was not moving furniture to inspect the kitchen to show evidence of where the mould was.
I informed them that both my mother and I suffer with asthma, and had grave concerns about the impact

It’s shabby and lacking care in some places in this cottage, and we left a lot of suggestions in the maintenance book…..which we noticed were repeated often by previous holidaymakers The bedrooms and the bath and shower rooms were good …it was the lounge and kitchen that were less than ok Outside seating area was unclean and neglected too It needs some TLC

Wasn’t as my expectations.
Way dirtier and way more worn than expected.
Small cluttered

Positive: It's a great house. Has everything you need.
Host keeps updates regular and contact number there should you need it.
Would definitely use again as a base when in the area.

The Ships Bell is a beautiful cottage that is full of character. I really loved the kitchen and the smell of the old stone wall. It was really well equipped. the beds were very comfortable and the two bathrooms were lovely. The Ships bell is a very short walk to the harbour and you can see the river from the bedroom window. The only small negative is that there is no parking in the old part of the village. You can stop for a short time to unload, but it can be difficult to get a space. My advice is to pack sensibly, so you can load and unload the car quickly! I would definitely stay again :)

The house was in an ideal position, 2 mins to shops, beach and accessing the Cleveland way. Good size rooms, and was clean but needed a deep clean and attention to detail. The house in parts looked tired and needed painting, the front needed weeding and general TLC. Some milk on arrival but nothing else and to provide a coffee machine but no pods (it might as well not be there). It has the potential to be lovely but just lacked a little care sadly.

Fabulous location. House very warm. Low ceiling in kitchen, but we managed fine. Mugs are in the cupboard next to the sink! Comfy beds. Plenty hot water.

The property was excellent clean and easy to find also with walking distance from see view. There is very less shops for eating. Place was very quiet 🤫. Host was very good . Check out times must be at least 1 hour extra like at 11 will be the great .. overall our stay was very good

The cottage is typical of the properties in Staithes which is a lovely village if a bit of a challenge to walk. overall the property was OK but there were cleanliness issues ith a number of items in the kitchen i.e. plates, pans and cutlery. We needed to do a bit of cleaning before using certain items and have asked the hosts to look at a deep clean of the kitchen, The bedrooms and linen were all very clean. There were a number of maintenance issues that had been outstanding since previous guests had raised them i.e. no working shower in the upstairs bathroom, light bulbs needing replacement, emergency torch needing batteries. These have all been noted in the maintenance book and hopefully will be addressed. They were also flagged to the host who acknowledged our contact but it wasn't really practical to deal with during our stay. Overall we enjoyed our time in Staithes and mostly enjoyed the property but just tempered somewhat by the lack of attention to some issues previously raised.

Positive: Nice house. Cosy. Log burner. Location.
Negative: Was freezing when we arrived. Difficult to operate heating. Radiators all needed bleeding. Took hours for us to get warm and when the heating did come on it made noises all night. One log and a few pieces of coal for the burner. Showers too complicated. Couldn't stand up in the kitchen, particularly at sink area. Toilet was leaking.

Really loved staying at the ship’s Bell. Great location and easy to find. The lounge was slightly smaller than we expected from the photographs but all the other rooms were as expected.
A couple of minor issues were that the cooker didn’t work and neither did the shower above the bath. However, there was another Bathroom with a wonderful shower!
Overall we had a great stay X

Ships bell at Staithes
Positive: Loved the location...superb. House was quirky, cosy and clean. With everything we needed.
Negative: Didn't like that the inner door from porch to living room was broken and we kept having to lift the bar up to click it shut. Also the upstairs shower above bath wasn't working.

Quirky house in the village
Positive: Quirky house in a great location less than a minute walk to the middle of Staithes. Beds were comfy and the property has its own charm. Lots of books and board games, 2 bathrooms also very much appreciated.
Negative: More lighting needed in the kitchen, especially above the oven. The house is in need of some improvements, paint flaking off the walls and doors for example, it felt a little tired inside. Very limited welcome essentials - no nespresso pods for the coffee maker, eggs or bread etc. We stay in a lot of self catering and this is provided as standard 99% of the time. Little things like this push an average score to become a high score. Odd smell in the kitchen, some reed diffusers would help.
