Amazing location right on the moors, very spacious and ideal for a family or couple
Beautiful place to stay right in the heart of the moors. Surroundings are breathtaking and feel very peaceful. Great set up for kids- loads of toys and games , baby gate, high chair and travel cot all included. Not loads to do in the immediate area but great for walks and just short drive to town or the beach
Amazing property, can’t do it justice in a review. Better than the pics. Very special place to spend some time as a family. We were in the area for a wedding - beautiful countryside and lots of fun things to do / visit locally. Great communication with host. My only improvement would have been to have a few dishwasher tablets and washing machine pods available as we arrived late and with a baby, so that would have been helpful. Would return and recommend.
Really lovely cottage in beautiful setting with secure garden, secure parking and stunning views - not overlooked at all. Very responsive host. Would love to stay again in the future - was perfect for two adults and two kids.
Really lovely cottage to stay in with family. Local village is lovely and walkable, the views of the moors are incredible. Very quiet and private, and brillantly located for beaches, towns, activities etc (all 1/2 hour drive or less)
Gorgeous cottage, well thought out including room for a child with toys and books. Positive: Beautiful spot, lovely cottage. Negative: Only downside was a few low points in the ceiling which caught out the taller members of our group
Cosy cottage tucked away in the beautiful Cleveland hill. A beautiful property that unfortunately has really been let down by the hosts. On arrival we were greeted by a dysfunctional kitchen (hobs not working) and no log fire (no wood) . I understand that amenites can have issues however, what is done to address this by the hosts is my concern. I immediately raised these issues (particularly hob issue) with the hosts and their response was, we aren't willing to cover meal expenditure for the period effected and we shall send a technician out the following day to investigate. This never happened and we left the place on our departure date with the non-operational amenities the way we arrived. This was only resolved with Airbnb support intervention who really stepped up and took our complain seriously. Our family holiday ruined and I'm afraid I wouldn't be able to recommend Host & Stay as a host. Lastly, be careful not to fall into the hidden charges applied - read description
Fantastic stay, ticked all the boxes for what we needed, peaceful, tranquil in beautiful surroundings with everything we needed as a family of 5
Absolutely beautiful scenery and location. We felt so relaxed and rested sat by the fire looking across the moors. We enjoyed a moorland walk everyday and loved coming back to the cosy cottage in a private setting. The kids loves their bedroom and many and adventure was had by them. Perfect lo action to celebrate my mums birthday before we head back to Australia !
A truly fabulous location with wonderful views, you can walk straight onto the moors. Ideally for a family with a dog. We will definitely be staying here again. It’s felt like home from home with all the extra luxuries you want for a country break.
We had a wonderful family break. The inside of the cottage is absolutely beautiful with everything you could need. The location is stunning, walks right from the gate of the cottage onto the moors. I would thoroughly recommend Lop Hall!
Fantastic cottage on the edge of the moors with amazing views! Very peaceful and private. Very comfortable beds and decorated very nicely! The instructions to find it were clear and had no problem with finding it, hosts are very responsive. We had a great time exploring Whitby and Sandsend beach. Would definitely stay again!
We had an absolutely wonderful stay at Lop Hall on the edge of Danby. The house was spotless, beautifully comfortable, and had everything we needed for a relaxing break. Communication from Host & Stay was excellent from start to finish, making everything seamless. The location is nothing short of magical — it felt like stepping straight into the pages of a Famous Five adventure or a Beatrix Potter story, with stunning countryside right on the doorstep. We couldn’t have asked for a better spot to unwind and explore. Highly recommended!
Lovely secluded cottage with walks across the moor directly from the property. Two pubs within a mile or so radius. The location given by Google maps is not the location of the property (correct village but not exactly where the cottage is located) so this needs resolving with Google Maps if possible (no problem if using Apple Maps). Also please note the garden is not really 'secure' as some dogs (including mine) would make short work of the low stone wall on one side. Overall a very pleasant stay; quiet, secluded and comfortable!
A lovely house with lots of character and walks from the doorstep. The views from every window are incredible and the cosy log burner was ideal as we watched the storm blow outside. Lop Hall had everything we needed for a relaxing weekend away in the countryside.
This is a lovely cottage in a fantastic location. It's been very stylishly decorated and was perfect for our requirements as a base for walking and a very comfortable place to eat, drink, chat and relax. Special mentions for the views and the very comfortable beds. There are a few very minor improvements needed to earn it 5 stars on all counts but these could (and hopefully will be) very easily resolved. I'm communicating that feedback directly. Anyway - very highly recommended and I hope to return.
A wonderful cottage amid beautiful scenery - we loved our week here and will definitely come back. It's cosy and warm and packed with books and games. Comfy sofas and beds, and everything was very clean and well looked-after. The immediate area is stunning - you can walk straight from the door for miles over peaceful moorland, often without seeing another soul. Or you can wander down the hill into Danby for cake at the cafe, shopping at the Botton health food shop next to the cafe, and a trip to the gallery at the moors centre. Highly recommended.
Lop Hall is an idyllic, clean cottage, full of character and every comfort. The setting, right on the moors with rabbits running around the garden and sheep nosing around the cars, is beautiful. But then again a short walk takes you to the village and a short drive to the coast.
The only noise is from the local wildlife which is a pleasant change from the sound of traffic. Beautiful scenery. Well equipped, very clean on arrival. Nice pub, farm type shop and bakery in the village( the bacon sandwiches are a must!) We had a great time exploring the local area.
Lovely and comfortable property in beautiful location. Convenient for walking the moors and the coastal paths. Very helpful and responsive hosts.
Moorland location. Great views. Very relaxing. Positive: Great location. Comfortable and spacious house. Good qualities linen. Excellent WiFi. Dog friendly. Lots of books and games. Negative: Our stay was too short. Track to house might put off people with very smart or sports cars.
Absolutely idyllic place. Dog friendly inside - fenced in garden - paths onto moors straight from house. Everything in the house was functional and comfortable. Needed the woodburner as was a very cold spell. Would recommend having stove pipe checked for a blockage as a very poor draw even in high winds. (Smoke regularly entered the room when door opened) This did not spoil the stay though and we want to return.
on a word Fantastic. location is amazing very private and stunning views with great walks from the doorway and Yorks coast and moors a short drive. cottage was very clean, warm and well equipped. Everything you could need for little ones and very dog friendly.
Great cottage with great views, great walks for the dogs and very private, we had a lovely week
Positive: Lovely area, great location for dog walking, accommodating regards to being dog friendly
A lovely, spacious cottage perched down its own private track on the moors. Lop Hall is perfect for rambling out across the moors and relaxing on your return. One walk took in the local shop (now a health food shop), the bakery & the moors visitor centre, then round the valley to the castle, a meal at the Fox & Hounds (amazing!) and back to Lop Hall. We also found it a great spot to explore the coast (including boat trips at Whitby) and other moorland towns & villages. The garden is left very natural which meant we had some lovely wildlife visiting. Would definitely visit again & recommend to others.
Absolutely brilliant! We all thought the house was beautiful will amazing views. It was cozy and well equipped. we had stayed for a wedding and was a great place near the venue! The house is not a far drive from coast at all!!! Definitely would stay here again.
beautiful cottage with stunning views.very peaceful place, perfect for relaxing and unwinding for a few days.lots of things to do especially if you like walking in the countryside.great warm and welcoming pubs nearby.myself my husband our teenage son and my mother and the dogs loved our stay.
Overall loved our stay and was perfect for what we needed. Positive: The location was absolutely perfect for the wedding we were attending at Danby castle barn. Lovely and cosy with good social space. Kindly provided a travel cot and high chair which was greatly appreciated. Regular / quick messages from the host through booking.com and clear instructions throughout the property. Negative: All very minor details but feel they add to the over cleanliness feeling of the property: - no tea towels provided - in bunk bed room we noticed a brown stain on the carpet near the bottom bed with an unpleasant smell - think it had been cleaned before but was lingering - no bins in the bathrooms
Lop Hall is in a very beautiful idyllic location. Garden is enclosed as described. We did have an issue with getting hot water in the kitchen, we followed the instructions but it still didn’t work, I raised this but it was not resolved during our stay. The oven also required cleaning and there was a strong oil smell when using it and the pans were also not very clean. Everything else was fine, lots of books and games to keep you entertained which was a nice touch. The views are stunning from the house and you are not overlooked at all.
The cottage is in a beautiful remote location in the National park. We loved having the log burner on at night it made it very cosy and the whole stay was very relaxing. The beds were very comfy and we found everything we needed in the kitchen. We would like to visit this stunning cottage again, for longer next time.
Positive: View. Negative: Could have been cleaner.
An absolute gem
A beautiful cottage in a perfect bit of nature surrounded by cute and delightful destinations Positive: Beautiful property and surroundings. Such a delightful cottage. Well equipped and the owners communicated well. If I had the money, I'd be throwing it st the owners to buy it. I had such a good time just existing in the space. Negative: The beds were only OK and the pillows were a bit meh.
We had a wonderful 4 nights at Lop Hall. The views were breathtaking & the cottage very well appointed with lots of very thoughtful touches. The location is convenient for the moors or visiting the coast and moorland walks straight from the cottage. We couldn’t get Freeview to work so had 4 days without TV - a blessing! Other reviews mentioned there’s no longer a Co-Op in Castleton. It’s now a Londis! Just two miles away and handy for any emergency items. The Duke of Wellington is a 10 min walk away and is serving very good pub food again (Sept ‘26). We also enjoyed a meal at the Fox & Hounds at Ainthorpe. A great setting. We enjoyed decent weather and like to be outside as much as possible. Staring at the view or stargazing! All in all we strongly recommend this place.
Wonderful location on the moors, ten minutes walk to the village, and great walking from the door. Village has a good pub, a fantastic bakery with cafe and a shop. House is an old stone cottage. Lots of character, a little dark inside as you might expect for the age of the property. Comfortable beds and sofas in the sitting room. Both bathrooms quite small. Some of the kitchen pots and pans could do with updating (non-stick very scratched).
Beautiful cottage in such an amazing location. You can walk out the door straight onto the North York Moors. The cottage itself is lovely, really well equipped, comfy beds and spacious enough for family and our dog. Great location too - you can explore the various costal villages and Whitby along with the moors. Would definitely recommend
The cottage is characterful and in a fantastic location with wonderful views of the moors and an easy walk into the village which has a few facilities such as the pub, bakery/ cafe (highly recommended), health food shop, EV charge point, and train station. The NYM Visitor Centre is around a mile away with a cafe and activities for the kids. There are lovely walks from the doorstep. As others have said, the mobile signal is poor, though that is to be expected in the moors, and the wifi is not great and a little unreliable, which had the benefit of reducing my screentime. Overall though, we loved it.
Nice location… a lot of greenery… beautiful cottage… warm and cozy… comfortable beds and fantastic sleep… wonderful place to recharge your body and mind 😊
An absolutely amazing location, very quiet and private with lots of local trails to explore. Would love to stay again.
Beautiful, comfortable cottage, full of character in a stunning location- private and secluded. Positive: Beautiful location, amazing views over the moors. Very quiet, private and secluded along a track off a viewpoint. The cottage was full of character, and very comfortable. Roomy and comfortable lounge for 6 of us and lovely bedrooms. We stayed here to attend our daughter's wedding at Danby Castle, and staying at Lop Hall added to the specialness of the occasion. Highly recommended.
A glorious location on the edge of the moor above the village. A lovely stroll down to the pub which is in the Good Beer Guide and the ale was on form indeed. The only disappointment was that they don’t do Sunday dinner but a trip to the Downe Arms in Castleton was worth it for the roast. Only other point to note is that the Coop in Castleton actually closed down permanently on the day before we arrived so a trip to Guisborough it was. The property itself had everything we needed but the only negative was the very poor WiFi. Combined with no mobile coverage, it just made planning things a bit more difficult so I would recommend you do your planning beforehand. It just meant that I had to pop up to 4G corner a mile up the road! Recommend using the bird feeders on the wall outside the lounge window to see a remarkable amount of wild birds and the rabbits in the garden were cute as (and the dog agreed). Overall we would thoroughly recommend and would happily stay again
Great property and very peacceful with beautiful views of the sunrise. Would definately book again if coming back to the local area.
Fantastic house in a fantastic location, well worth the money.
The cottage was lovely, nice and homely and beautiful location. We had a great time!! 10/10 for the cottage! Unfortunately we had a couple of issues with host and stay… firstly as others have said the google maps address they give is the wrong location. I queried this a few times and was just given the co-ordinates which were also wrong. Also when we booked the £25 damage waiver applied. An hour before check in we were told it was £39. I messaged numerous times but didn’t get anywhere. Ended up ringing and were told it’s an issue with Air bnb and we had to pay but will be refunded…. Still waiting for the refund. All in all though if these issues were resolved before hand I would have given 5 stars as the cottage was lovely!
Lovely place in a beautiful location. Spacious, comfortable and peaceful. We had a lovely weekend.
absolutely stunning surroundings
We loved staying here. Beautiful house in beautiful surroundings. The view from the picnic table was amazing. We would happily return. Only thing to improve would be more dishwasher tablets and bin bags to last the stay.
Great stay thank you
Lop Hall is a beautiful cottage in an amazing location, on the moor, 15 mins from the coast. Very well equipped with good quality furnishings and very comfortable. Area beautiful and interesting. Pubs serving good food locally. Host was very helpful indeed when we had a problem of our own making.
Charming, cosy and well equipped cottage. The bed was really comfortable and together with the peaceful, picturesque location made for a really good night's sleep. Make sure you download the brochure when sent to find location instructions.
Absolutely beautiful place, 100% recommend! The views can not be beaten! We will definitely be rebooking!
This is a great place to stay! Amazing views and clean and in a nice village with a Pub and Bakery. Lots of walks from the house and even though we were there over Easter we hardly saw anyone else!
Absolutely beautiful house, we loved our stay. The perfect location to watch the sunset, felt very peaceful. would love to return
Great stay. House is just outside the village on the moor. Log burner and heating worked great to keep us toasty warm when it was cold and wet outside. Would definitely stay again.
lovely stay in such a beautiful location ❣️
Lovely place to stay with great views of Danby moors
Thank you for staying with us. We hope that you enjoyed your stay. We would love to welcome you back in one of our property in the future.
Beautiful home, highly recommend
Great property, fabulous location, fantastic views and easy access to local bakery and pub. Accommodation was very comfortable and thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
Good place for a peaceful, scenic and basic rustic get away stay Positive: Details from the hosts was plentiful and informative and getting entry was really easy. The location was perfect in terms of the views and if you want peace and quiet. The Kitchen was modern with good equipment. Bathrooms were modern and clean. Good size living rooms. Great idea of a sensor light switch at the top of the stairs. Negative: The living room, dining room and the bedrooms are basic and rustic in appearance and quality of furniture, which is not what we expected. Reported a problem about the lack of hot water from the kitchen tap but heard nothing back. The driveway vegetation needs cutting back. Neither logs nor kindling provided to light the wood burner, (only between Nov and March).
Great place in a good location. Although people should be made aware of the added cost of insurance . Overall the place was really nice, clean and had all amenities that we needed.
Lop Hall is a very nice home in a beautiful setting. I would likely have given it 5 stars but was frustrated by the experience with Host & Stay. One week before arrival, when it was too late to get all our money back, I received a message that I had to pay for additional insurance before I would receive property access. It turns out this insurance also only covers damage reported during the stay - not damage identified after a guest leaves. Upon reviewing the listing I see that the additional fees are mentioned near the bottom of the lengthy property description. I suspect most renters will not notice this. The amount of money is not significant but I felt like I was being scammed. Extra fees should be clear and people should be notified early enough to change plans. Host & Stay sent me a Google maps link to use that directs to the wrong location. To get written directions I had to navigate to the online guide, which was difficult to do when already in a remote location.
Lovely property in idyllic surroundings
Relaxing Positive: Location and comfortable Negative: Strong smell of soot, which was a problem as I have asthma, no bins in bathrooms, very dusty in places
Beautiful location with amazing views from the house, provides all needed facilities as it says in the description and would definitely recommend!
Lovely property. Positive: Character filled and views Negative: Nothing but co-ordinates are wrong and location of 42 on goggle maps is wrong! Make sure you read the directions with regard the location of the car park/lookout on the left before entering Danby coming from the north.
A lovely house in a beautiful and serene location.
Really beautiful cottage in a stunning location. Everything we needed was there
Awful customer service but a lovely house. Positive: Beautiful scenery and lovely house. Negative: WiFi was very intermittent and at multiple times just would not work leaving us with no signal as it was as very remote. Many of the contacts in the book were out of date. Initially we were told the admin fee for the deposit would be refunded as there was no mention of it in the booking. This has since changed but they would not honour the refund of the admin fee even though they said they would. Overall the person we messaged to here rude and left a bad taste in our mouth to what could have been a lovely stay as the house was lovely.
Wonderful week on the North York Moors. Fabulous house, with wonderful views. Positive: Fabulous location and house. Beautiful views. Very well stocked kitchen. Negative: Nothing!
Amazing cottage in beautiful surroundings
Autumn break Great property, stunning location.
Beautiful home in the most stunning location. Perfect weekend stay to relax and enjoy the peace and quiet.
Wonderful cottage in an idyllic location. Very well equipped and space well thought out. Never tire of the view and watching the birds in the morning was lovely - especially the resident pheasant! Can highly recommend.
Stunning spot for a remote getaway, but not too far from popular tourist destinations of Whitby and Staithes. Beautiful surroundings with lovely garden too, we really enjoyed our stay and would recommend

Great Property, comfy with everything you need. Enjoyed our stay and loved the peace and quiet.
