Positive: Quiet in the heart of the village, easy parking at rear and comfortable with well equipped kitchen. Dog friendly as well. Good wifi Negative: TV could do with an update to go online ie netflix etc very minor thing.

GuestAirbnbAug 2025

Great place to stay for visiting our family in Grosmont. Place was as described with plenty of room for us and the dog. Host provided lots of info to make it easy to find/get access as well as lots of great tips for what to do in the area!

Vinnie274Booking.comJun 2023

Lovely location for a comfy little cottage Positive: The location was perfect Negative: No enclosed garden, which is difficult with dogs

PaskBooking.comJan 2023

Loved it! Positive: An extremely cosy little cottage in a lovely area. Everything you need is right at hand. Would definitely visit again. Loved that we could take our 2 little dogs along. Negative: N/A as far as the cottage went. Booking was easy. The only slight difficulty was with emailing. Things got a bit confusing around the 'superhog' link/completion.

Lovely cottage, superb location, very comfortable and enjoyable stay Positive: The cottage was very well equipped with everything, lovely welcoming, very comfortable and superb location. Onsite parking which was great, a little tight but I do drive a camper and managed to fit in. Amazing walks from the doorstep as well as the station location.

debraBooking.comAug 2024

We had a brilliant stay . Positive: We were very comfy here lovely little cottage with great surrounding countryside 😊 Negative: Nothing about the cottage it self although we did find the next door neighbour very rude😔

Positive: Beautiful little cottage. Great location. We came for the Whitby goth weekend but the cottage is in a perfect location for the coast to coast walk and the steam railway. Very secure property, great little out room space. Kitchen facilities were good. Very clean throughout. Bedding was comfortable. Great that there was a parking space round the back of the cottage to avoid street parking. The station inn local pub just maybe 50 metres down the road, lovely little village pub, serves a good pint. Communication from start to finish was excellent, polite and efficient. Negative: Not really negatives, but maybe a larger couch in the livingroom or an extra armchair. Kettle liked to leak but again not a huge disaster.

GuestAirbnbMar 2023

Lovely terraced cottage great for walking and exploring the area. I would recommend. Only small point is that we were looking for a cottage with an open fire - in an enquiry the fire was described as an open fire which it is not - it is an electric fire. Worth knowing that the only pub in the village was closed all three night when we were there so may be worth ringing and checking if you are relying on that as somewhere to eat - the nearest walkable pub is about 30 mins walk away in Egton. There is a cooperative type drinks only bar just across the road and there is a village shop.

Lovely cottage in great location My husband, toddler, and greyhound stayed for three nights in this lovely cottage. It was quiet and cozy, with all the amenities we needed. The location was perfect for accessing the train station and pub. Our dog was also very comfortable—the house did not smell of pets. It had been cleaned very well.

Beautiful cottage. Host and Stay responded immediately to a couple of queries. I would have liked the use of a tumble dryer as the weather was not good and we struggled to get clothes dried during our 5 week stay. Would recommend Lavender Cottage and would stay again.

1st Hist & Stay - if you’re not techy the lack of written guidelines is frustrating. My husband who is one such person was frustrated with this as he had to rely on me! 2 I was really concerned when on one site we read it had gas central heating, only to find it was electric convector wall mounted heaters - because it was cold we had the heaters on most of the time, which made us feel very guilty because of the cost of heating 3 asking people to leave clean and tidy when there was a lack of vacuum cleaner, broom brush etc However the above didn’t detract from our stay which we thoroughly enjoyed in spite of the inclement weather !!

Having checked the reviews for this place before booking we were extremely disappointed to arrive and find a cold, damp, grubby and dirty property. We weren't expecting luxury by any stretch but there is absolutely no actuse for dirty accomodation. Cobwebs everywhere, stains on appliances and walls, lights full of dirt and flies... need I go on. The hall and stairs carpet is absolutely disgusting to the point we didnt take our shoes off. There is paint / plaster coming off the bedroom ceiling, shower curtain (it's 2026 by the way) rail is about to fall down. It sounds like there are also slates or flashing loose on the roof as it kept us awake with the wind blowing. We had booked for 2 nights and it was so bad we left after 1. Host and Stay's response has been a 'holding position' for 2 weeks now telling us it is with 'customer relations' which to my mind is completely unreasonable. Our advice would be to avoid like the plague.

Positive: Comfortable and clean with easy to follow checkin instructions Negative: Nothing

AlisonBooking.comOct 2026

A clean, warm and comfortable property ideally located for our needs. Positive: The location was perfect as we were exploring the NYMR. The lounge and kitchen were comfortable and well equiped. Although the shower was over bath rather than stand alone the water pressure was reasonable. Negative: The bed in the room we chose to use was very squeaky. As my husband is tall the in bath shower was a challenge for him.

RogerBooking.comSep 2026

All in all we had a great stay Positive: Great location next to the railway station and pub. Rooms were clean and tidy with comfortable bed. Plenty of cooking facilities in the kitchen if you needed them. Also electric heaters in the rooms if required and hot water for shower. Negative: On arrival on entering there was a bit of a fusty smell but this didn’t distract too much. The kitchen had a roller blind missing so this made it not private especially at night time. The bracket was there but the blind wasn’t. The TV was a dated flatscreen, it was okay but as my wife said, a bit toytown ish. 😂

GuestAirbnbSep 2026

Lavender Cottage is the best cottage in Grosmont for value for money and great comfortable, clean and quality property. It’s located up the hill from the NYMR station and engine sheds. The cafe in the old school house is fabulous. Food is exceptional with view of the railway.

GuestAirbnbSep 2026

Had a great stay at lavender cottage and will hopefully be back in the future. It was very clean, homely and had a lot of what we needed. I will say that only one toilet roll and one cloth wasn’t really enough for a three night stay but other than that the facilities were great. The train station is a stones throw away and we loved getting the steam train into whitby. The old school cafe is also definitely worth a visit. Plenty of walks nearby and things to do. Thank you

Relaxing and peaceful time. Perfect to unwind Positive: Centre of the village. Everything was labeled with helpful hints. The pack of information for visitors

A super little cottage in a great location. 2 mins walk to the platform at Grosmont Station where you can spend all day watching the trains.

GuestAirbnbAug 2026

Nice cottage in this lovely village.

CarlBooking.comAug 2026

Great location Positive: Location was great Negative: The carpets had dog hairs and the hot water took time to heat. No plug near the mirror in either bedroom to dry hair.

GuestAirbnbJul 2026

Lavender Cottage is our favourite place to stay when we’re in Grosmont. It’s extremely well appointed, comfortable, clean and a wonderful place to live in.

GuestAirbnbJun 2026

Ideally situated cottage for visiting North Yorkshire Railway gala event and a trip to see Whitby by train too. Cottage was easy to find, had all the amenities you'd need and a good healthy hill walk at the end of the day. Host was responsive and helpful to queries. Would stay here again.

We had a lovely stay. The cottage was clean and tidy and in a beautiful location. There were some lovely walks nearby and a friendly pub just 50m walk down the hill. The hosts were very proactive and also replied quickly to our queries which made our whole stay easy and stress free.

MarianneVrboApr 2026

Tiny cottage but warm and comfortable. Comfy beds with nice cotton bed linen. Very steep stairs. All electric heating & cooking. If self-catering you need to bring everything; oil, salt, pepper, etc. Quite tight parking at rear of property. Fairly well-equipped kitchen but basic appliances and no dishwasher. Co-op convenience store close by, also friendly pub. Short walk to railway station, although no trains to Whitby until May 2026 and engine shed only open Mondays. Quiet village, seems to be mainly holiday lets.

JaneBooking.comNov 2025

Perfect for steam train enthusiasts! Positive: Location was amazing for a steam train fanatic as it was really close to Grosmont railway station and the engine sheds. Perfect! Negative: Too many emails from Host and Stay. It would have been better to have a coffee machine to make a nice coffee in the morning, as the cafetiere in the property didn't work very well.

GuestAirbnbNov 2025

We were visiting Grosmont to go the NYMR 'Flying Scotsman' Special and so booked Lavender Cottage. It was a stone's throw from both the local pub and the railway station and so very convenient. Also the location allowed easily exploration of the surrounding areas and into Whitby The cottage was lovely, clean, comfortable and warm with all the facilities and utensils you need. The car parking space at the rear was fine, it can be a little tricky to park in if the Neighbours at No. 3 are at home. If you are tall, you might have the occasional argument with the light in the second bedroom! Overall a great place and would happily stay there again.

Positive: Lovely cottage clean and well equipped.

GuestAirbnbAug 2025

Clean and with everything you might need for a short stay so cant fault that. My only critiism is that the property could do with a little modernisation (particularly the bathroom) Otherwise, good location and comfortable enough.

M.Booking.comJul 2025

Kan ermee door Positive: Goede locatie Negative: Douchekop versleten Geen uitzicht Houten bedframe valt bijna uit elkaar

GuestAirbnbJul 2025

Our stay was excellent. We were right in the centre of the village. Ideal for what we planned to do. As three old codgers the stairs were a little steep but we managed.

DianeBooking.comJul 2025

Lovely stay Positive: The location was perfect for our stay. We loved being so close to the steam trains and the engine sheds. We had easy access to other places that we wanted to visit. The people in the village were so welcoming, and the food at the Station Tavern was delicious. The Co-op was great for stocking up on snacks and souvenirs. We really enjoyed the walk along the cinder track to Goathland. Such a beautiful and interesting walk. We loved looking around the church and finding all of the little animals dotted around it. The church cafe, run by volunteers on Thursdays, was lovely, too. Lovely, comfortable little cottage. Negative: The parking was quite tight, as mentioned in other reviews, but we were glad it was so close. We had to check round the front to make sure we were parking in the correct place. The hidden insurance cost was asked for a week before our holiday, although it has been mentioned in many other reviews, and the agents have said that they will look at it. We didn't get parking or key information until 6 hours before our booking began, which was stressful, because we had to leave home early in the morning and I was worried about having a phone signal to get the information.

Would like to come again:) Positive: House and location Negative: No tv in the bedrooms

stuartVrboJun 2025

Een zeer schoon en licht appartement, met veel ruimte.

stuartVrboJun 2025

very much of its time.brought back memories of the 1960s when growing up but with a few up to date things eg telly and microwave and an upstairs bathroom.

BrettBooking.comMay 2025

Poor service from staff left a bad taste. Positive: Handy location for the North York Moors Negative: Reception staff was appalling. It took several phone calls and emails before I could get someone to send me the access code for the key safe. There emails repeatedly said this would be sent by email a week before arrival but I was still chasing it on the day of arrival. A lot of stress that could have been avoided with decent staff and some training and care.

AntonyBooking.comMay 2025

Positive: Lovely location, just by the pub and the heritage railway station. Very convenient to get on the train for days out. The house was very clean and comfortable, fully equipped kitchen etc. Excellent. Negative: To be honest, I really liked the place. If anything, if you have a large car you could struggle to park in the space behind the house.

JamieBooking.comDec 2024
JOHNBooking.comDec 2024

Positive: The cottage is well situated and well equipped.

JuliaBooking.comSep 2024

Disappointing Positive: Quiet village, pub closeby Negative: No niceties in cottage, eg welcome pack, tea towel, kitchen towel, tissues, books. . Settees were small and not comfortable. Space only suitable for a small car. Spiders webs were evident in places. Didn't like insurance demand being added after the booking was made.

DavidBooking.comSep 2024

Very pleasant, close to the NYMR, the village shop and the local pub. Positive: Location was exactly as described. Parking is a bit tight for a large car but I was able to get my Jaguar in ok.

JosephineBooking.comAug 2024

Dirty toilet Positive: Enjoyed Whitby Negative: The toilet was blocked, when flushed the water, came up to the rim. After unblocking the toilet, the bowl was stained with toilet. It was disgusting.

KarenBooking.comAug 2024
sallyBooking.comAug 2024

a bit disappointed, will avoid host and stay in future Positive: Good location, comfortable cottage but no welcoming little extras Negative: host & stay were not good - took balance before arranged date causing me to go overdrawn, charged £60 cleaning fee after deposit paid, also charged £30 damage waiver (or £350 damage deposit) Kept contacting too much with many rules and felt overbearing. Felt pestered & under duress to keep in line with their expectations - I am a careful & respectful holiday guest but felt doubted & stressed by them. No welcome pack, no hairdryer, dvds but no dvd player, no games.

GrahamBooking.comJul 2024

Positive: Lovely cottage in a great central location for exploring NY Moors. Very clean & comfortable. Car parking around the back for a small to medium sized car. Pub, co-op & NYMR station just down the road. Negative: Nothing to moan about here! All good for us.

IanBooking.comJul 2024

Place was lovely for a break but watch out for the extra add ones cleaning charge utilities charge Positive: Keys for the property where exactly where they said they would be Negative: No hot water on arrival had to wait for immersion heater no washing up liquid in property, late notice of having to take accident damage which was either £30 non refundable or £300 refundable with a £10 handling charge these should be mentioned when booking property

MartinBooking.comApr 2024

We had a lovely time. Positive: Lovely cottage in an ideal location for the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, Station Tavern, Coop and Grosmont Crossing Club. Clean and comfy and with everything needed to cater for a few days. Negative: There is a compulsory insurance payment over and above the Booking.com fee which I think is disingenuous. The host communication was also not very clear. The parking space is small - it was OK for us but you would struggle with a big car such as an MPV.

JohnBooking.comJan 2024
PeteBooking.comNov 2023

Pleasant but disappointing for price out of season Positive: Pleasant cottage in a lovely location. Tidy and reasonably furnished and decorated. Short walk from village shop and train station (also a local pub which we didn't visit as it is closed Mon & Tues) Train to Whitby is nice trip. No steam trains in November. Negative: The Cottage was freezing when we arrived. No timers on electric heaters, guess no-one had stayed in a while. Dirty towel hung on the curtain pole. I have never stayed in a property with such barren cupboards! A few sachets of uht milk a few Tea bags. Clearly gone are the days of welcome trays ! I work in hospitality and have managed many properties, for the price paid out of season this one was a little lacking in comforts. I am not sure if this is on the part of the owners or the letting company. On a final note the messages chasing a unexpected insurance fee AFTER booking were not appreciated.

julieBooking.comOct 2023

Positive: fantastic location Negative: nothing

GuestAirbnbAug 2023

We booked LavenderCootage because we were going to spend time on NYMR. It was very convenient for the station and the pub. A nice , clean, comfortable cottage. Only two minor niggles, the TV could do with being WiFi enabled, allowing gueststo bring their own firesticks and the car parking space at the rear of the property was rather tight for our Volvo XC60. Overall a very pleasant stay. Overall

Great location for visiting Whitby and North Yorks with good transport links. A super cottage which was very clean and matched the description given. The kitchen was well equipped with instructions for appliances at hand. I would highly recommend staying at Lavender cottage.

PaulBooking.comApr 2023

everything we hoped it would be. Positive: everything. Negative: being very, very picky would be nice to have bigger second sofa in lounge but that’s just looking for something!

GuestAirbnbApr 2023

GuestAirbnbMar 2023

Gorgeous cottage, quiet, well appointed kitchen, lovely little village. Very comfortable beds and good curtains.

GuestAirbnbFeb 2023

Great location for trains to Whitby , nice quiet cottage , very clean

AlexandraBooking.comFeb 2023

Positive: Nice cottage in a sweet village. Good location. Negative: Hot water did not have enough for two people to wash and there was a significant delay for it to be turned back on. The “host and stay” system is very complicated and costs additional money for “damage deposit” does not seem worth it.
