This is a lovely property ideally located in the centre of Staithes. The house itself had everything we needed and felt very relaxing from the minute we arrived. Staithes is so beautiful and plenty to do as a family of 4 with a dog. We spent 4 days on holiday here and spent every minute in Staithes either in the beach, crab fishing in the amazing rock pools, taking some beautiful walks and eating in many of the tasty cafes and restaurants. A great place to relax and have fun

We had a great long weekend with family & dogs at Hampdon Cottage… a lovely decorated house over 4 floors, beautifully clean, lovely bed linen & comfortable beds, right in the heart of Staithes.
Would highly recommend!

Lovely cottage, very comfortable for a family of 5 with a dog. The kitchen was extremely well equipped and everywhere was extreme clean.
It was our first visit to Staithes and we would like to visit again.

Good Location but needs some TLC
Positive: The location was lovely and the cottage is very warm. The rooms are all of a good size and the decor is lovely too.
Negative: The microwave was not working when we arrived and tried to cook tea for the children. It was unplugged and when we plugged it in there was smoke and a grinding noise which was a bit alarming! This meant we had to heat everything on the hob and for a family of 4, there were not enough pans in the kitchen to make up for the broken microwave. We reported it, as we felt it might be dangerous, and the host and stay team were very responsive and a chap came out to us to ha e a look at it on day two. He told us something would get sorted, but we were later told in a text that the microwave would not be replaced as they didn't have another. This was despite us suggesting nearby Argos sells them for less than £50. So we left the microwave as we found it for the next family - unplugged.
The shower is also on its way out. The showerhead leakes water out of the sides and the on off button is missing entirely so you have to hold in a tiny switch under the missing on/off switch for more than 30 seconds or the water stops all together. The water pressure is also very poor so the water is luke warm at best. The window frames in the bedrooms are black with mildew and we found woodlice in the bathroom and bedrooms. (One in my son's bed!) There was no hairdryer as advertised just the nozzle was left in the wardrobe drawer and there was no space to hang anything because spare bedding was stacked high inside the wardrobe.
We have stayed in many cottages in Staithes and this is the only one we have had issues with. We noted later that that the cottage is currently up for sale, so the owners are possibly reluctant to spend any money on repairing or updating.

Nice comfy cottage
Positive: It was an adventurous cottage across 4 floors. Granddaughter loved it. Facilities were good and clean, and kitchen was well stocked. Beds were clean and comfy. It was 5 minutes from the harbour and there were some lovely pubs and tea rooms.
Negative: There was an over bath shower which was OK, but no bath mat or hand rails, so a little difficult to get in and out of without slipping.

Lovely family stay in excellent comfortable house.
Positive: Lovely property, with everything you need for a comfortable stay. I would definitely return. Lovely and clean with spotless linens.
Negative: Nothing

Absolutely loved our stay at Hampden Cottage. The location is excellent (limited access by car for arrival/departure day but with a little extra planning this wasn’t an issue at all). The cottage was cosy and comfortable and the kids loved their rooms. Easy access to great walks and amenities of the village. Would highly recommend. Thank you for an excellent holiday.

Lovely time with our family and dog at this cottage. Would not hesitate to recommend.
GuestAirbnbNov 2025
We stayed as a family of four adults and a dog, there was plenty of room and it was spotless. Staithes is a perfect spot to explore the coast. Kitchen is a great space for a family meal and we had everything we needed. We were a bit disappointed we couldn't use the open fire as this was a big draw for booking the cottage and we had bought coal, logs and firefighters ahead of arriving, however the electric fire warmed the room well so we got over it. I'd definitely recommend this cottage.

Very nice for a family group and dog.
Negative: Shower is a bit weak and we couldn’t find a bottle opener. Second visit though, lovely house overall!

Lovely house
Perfect location. Amenities great, though perhaps a tin opener would help in the kitchen. The house was clean and tidy with the exception of the rug in the lounge, which left dog hairs on our clothes. That said, we will be booking again to stay here.

Lovely house in the heart of Staithes. We were comfortable and warm during December and the cottage had been decorated for Christmas. Adding a few extra bits to the kitchen would be helpful so you don’t run out of cutlery etc after 1 meal - this would be handy.
Recommend the fish and chip shop at the top of the hill and, of course, the Cod and Lobster pub.
AndrewBooking.comJan 2025
Positive: Good size property in a good location
Negative: Generally it could have been a bit cleaner but might have been empty over Christmas. The main bedroom door didn’t close. There was no information about the area things to do etc. the photo of the living room shows an open fire but when we there it had been replaced by an electric one. This was fine and the property was warm just a bit misleading.

Good option for a short stay in Staithes
Positive: Property is very old and decorated and furnished accordingly - it looks lovely inside. It was also very clean throughout and well equipped, and when the heating is on its very cosy. Steep narrow staircases in keeping with the age and type of property. The TV has no terrestrial channels, just the Samsung TV channels. It does have Netflix etc which was handy. Bookcase with some games was a nice touch. We didn't play any of them except for using the deck of cards so no idea if they were complete. Tea. coffee and sugar provided with some milk sachets. Kitchen was lovely, very cosy and a nice place to eat. Our pooch was very comfortable in his bed in the kitchen next to the radiator. Communication was excellent, we had no issue getting in. Location is amazing - right next to the high street. No parking at the property - Staithes has very little parking - but there are free short-term spaces within steps of the property where you can unload and load. We had no trouble getting a space to load and unload, people generally just stay to load/ unload and then move so spaces came free quickly. There are 2 car parks at the top of the hill out of the village, one is private and one is the council. The council one is cheaper at just over £7 a day and from 1st November to 31st March its free. We just parked and left the car the whole time we were there. Lovely walks along the Cleveland way in both directions - the cliff tops are very breezy and blow the cobwebs away! Some steep climbs but that's Staithes!
Negative: The property is in need of a refurb. The bathroom in particular needs attention - the shower is totally unusable and not working properly, no pressure and the water alternates between boiling hot/ freezing cold. We just had baths instead but the plug seal is missing (someone has previously mentioned this and it doesn't seem to have been acted on) and so water does very gradually drain out while you're bathing. Some of the plugs make crackling noises when things are plugged in. In places it looks a bit tired - the tiles around the bath, the floor at one end of the living room which has been riddled with woodworm at some point and looks a bit precarious. Sofas aren't the most comfortable, quite narrow and could do with a pouffe to put your feet up. We found the bed a bit soft but that's a personal preference. It was good for a short stay of a few days but due to the issues with the bathroom, and the sofas and bed not being very comfortable we wouldn't stay for longer. The outside area is a bit tired with a few pots on it - a table and chairs would have been nice to be able to sit out.

Great location
Positive: Location is excellent, house is lovely , we especially enjoyed the choice of board games . We took a wildlife watching tour from the harbour, which was a 2 minute walk from the front door .

We’ve stayed in an air bnb previously in staithes but this one is much bigger with a nice sized kitchen below. The doors on the stairs are great for keeping little toddlers contained as well as the stairs in these sorts of places are a little steeper than modern houses. Very nice house indeed, with a little shop opposite open various times of the day. Not too much foot traffic past as well so nice and quiet on a street just off the Main Street down.
Cotbed was extremely comfortable for the little one. Bedrooms all lovely and bonus having two toilets as well with a large family staying. Unfortunately we were told on arrival a high chair isn’t present at the cottage although advertised as such at the time of booking but this wasn’t a big deal
overall a lovely cottage, perfectly positioned off the high street and near the waterway as well. Most likely one of the nicer roomier options available in staithes

Lovely stay in a sleepy fisherman’s village. A few pubs In walking distance and the beach a few minutes walk. Property was really
cosey and lovely! I had a 4 month old baby and access isn’t great and cobbled roads- doable but do your research if visiting with a baby xxxx

Its me, not you.......
What I liked:
- Very clean
- All mod cons (well, almost)
What I didn't like:
- Deposit: this incurs a fee, £35 pounds, or £10 pounds. I'm more than happy to pay a refundable deposit, this is not that, in it's entirety.
- Connectivity: no WiFi at the property.
The title of the review says it all I think......our 'weekend' was an unmitigated disaster, but not the fault of Host 'n Stay.
We were in the house for less than 2 hours, I was on-call for work and with no cell signal, and no Wi-Fi, that was that.
There is Wi-Fi in the property, but I wasn't allowed to connect, the password is missing and when I called to ask for it (I said I'd pay extra) they just kept telling me it wasn't a part of the amenities (the ad does say this, I missed it 'i.e. me, not you').
My wife left her kindle in the house, we found out when we got home, that's gone. Host 'n Stay say it wasn't there.
A case of expectations vs. agreements, I didn't check, they didn't match.

We had a lovely stay at the house in Staithes. Beware you cannot park at the property and parking in the village is limited. There is a car park at the top of the hill. It was only an issue for us as we have small children and we brought Grandad along too! We found it easy to drop them off and then drive up. Also limited shops in the old village for supplies such as milk / beer / wine especially after 5.
The house itself is beautiful and the location is very picturesque. Lots of pubs and cafes within easy reach and a short walk to the beach.
The dawn chorus will be seagulls!!

Staithes is a beautiful place to visit and we enjoyed staying at Hampdon Cottage. Lovely warm, cosy cottage. The kitchen was well equipped and the bedrooms were well presented.

Hampdon cottage was perfect for a great weekend away.
Positive: Great location, nice and quiet, super comfy for 5 adults. Lovely toiletries, very clean.
Negative: Kitchen was great but would benefit from a more generous supply of dishwasher tablets, bin bags, dishcloths. Bathroom was nice but struggled to control the temperature of the shower, it was either freezing or scorching hot.

Lovely weekend getaway
Positive: Great location for a last minute break. Lots of room, comfortable beds and perfect location near harbour area.
Once parked we did not use the car, but walked to Runswick Bay along Cleveland Way for coffee and swim in the sea.
Negative: Shower was a nightmare. Was either cold or hot. Would have been worse if you had young children as would not have been safe.
Could have been cleaner & pots at front door full of weeds, so just gives a slightly neglected feel to entrance. Would have been nice to have a bistro table & chairs to sit outside.
These issues would not stop us staying again, but if they were sorted would make it a pretty perfect house 😊

Staithes was a beautiful place to stay but with limited parking. We were lucky to secure a parking permit near the accommodation, however if we hadn’t it would have been difficult to park, unload, find the accommodation without a significant walk. The apartment was in keeping with Staithes and only a short walk to a beautiful beach and two great pubs. However, as cosy as the apartment was, the two additional bedrooms upstairs need attention, no valance on the divan and very small. The bathroom needed attention too, black mould around the bath seal, dust on window ledges and windows we couldn’t open and the shower was hot and cold so we couldn’t use. The carpet was stained on the stairs and there was previous rubbish left in the coal scuttle in the lounge. All that said, the kitchen was cozy and well equipped and the lounge had two settees so enough space for us! We recognise that the cottage is old and beautiful and in keeping with Staithes.

Do not stay here. Arrived 5pm Friday, left 10am Sunday in February . No heating, no hot water. Maintenance came out twice l, 2nd guy not even an heating engineer. Couldn’t get working. Offered alternative accommodation 10.30pm on the Saturday. Was in bed due to been so cold. Cottage is tired. Nothing like the pictures. Needs decorating and cleaning from top to bottom. Looked after by an agency that just doesn’t seem to care. Had to wash glasses and baking trays before we could use them. Damp in bedrooms, light bulbs missing in lights, mould around tiles in bathroom, no open fire as advertised. It’s a joke!!!
We use Airbnb regularly and have always had lovely relaxing stays in well looked after properties. Not this one. We will not be using any run by host and stay again.

Positive: wonderful location, spacious and light cottage given the topography of the village.
Negative: Cottage was dirty and tired. Some basics missing including adequate tea towels and hand soap in kitchen. The shower pressure was so low it was unusable.

The house, location and facilities were brilliant (although we couldn’t find a bottle opener!) Gorgeous house, excellent location.
Our only issue was Host and Stay’s lack of knowledge about the accommodation. It clearly states, on both Air BnB and other sites, that the single bed has a pull out bed underneath which can be set up as requested, taking the house from a 5-person to a 6-person. When I contacted Host and Stay to ask them to do this, they were ADAMANT that this house did not sleep six, there was no pull-out bed and that we could only have five guests. After reading reviews, we chanced it anyway…only to find a perfect pull-out bed, as described. I had to search around for additional bedding, using a very dusty duvet from on top of a wardrobe, but we made it work regardless.
All-in-all, we had a wonderful stay and would visit this exact house again.

A lovely little fisherman’s cottage in a fantastic location, full of charm and character. We really enjoyed our stay. Nice Short Stay in Staithes
Very nice period property in the heart of Staithes. Really enjoyed our short stay at this property. Would happily book again.
GuestAirbnbMay 2025
Microwave had a burning smell was shorting, nearly went through the floor due to a loose floorboard, toilet seat broken, couldn’t hang my clothes as the wardrobe stuffed with a duvet, shower wouldn’t stay on due to the on/off button missing, back door was completely missing a lock so couldn’t secure properly and finally a burst pipe in the kitchen left us with a flooded kitchen so couldn’t use anything in the kitchen we had no water to drink, no toilet facilities and no washing facilities, we couldn’t even brush our teeth. Had to chase host and stay for information which in the end they just left us in this situation without any solutions other than to turn the water off. We will be expecting a full refund and some form of compensating for this complete disappointing long weekend.

Avoid Host & Stay managed properties - read the views - nearly all are negative for this agent.
Positive: Good location and plenty of space. Well equipped and comfortable. Loo on second floor by two of the bedrooms very useful at night.
Negative: The property itself was lovely. Main issue with Host & Stay deposit system. At time of booking it was not made clear that a £250 deposit would be required and that £10 would be deducted when it was returned 2 weeks after the stay. Shoddy poor practice to extract extra fee from every booking. I would not book any property managed by Host & Stay in the future.
GuestAirbnbAug 2024
Lovely cottage and lovely coastal village. Would definitely stay again.
CarolynBooking.comAug 2024
Negative: The managing agent is extra ordinarily unhelpful. Really can't care less. You get bombarded with emails and texts about any damage... What do they expect, a Greek wedding? The Internet router is there, and on, but no code. Since there is no mobile reception in Staithes, this really is silly.
GuestAirbnbAug 2024
The property and location are amazing, it was exactly the break we needed and thoroughly enjoyed our time there.
It was only let down by the bad management and complete lack of response to both emails and messages regarding lost property.
Also, watch out for additional fees in the form of mandatory guest insurance or security deposit fees. I will not stay at a property managed by Host & Stay ever again.

This is a good place to stop in Staithes. It's an excellent location pretty much in the middle of the coastal village. It's just off the main road and very quiet and only a few minutes walk to the shops/pubs/harbour.
The kitchen and lounge are fairly well equipped although some of the kitchenware is looking quite old. Nice bedrooms.
No tea towels or kitchen roll - these would be handy.
The car park at the top is only 10 mins walk away (uphill) and 5 mins (downhill) and costs around £7 for 24 hours.
I would like the cleaning fee to be pro rated to the number of nights and persons stopping as there were only 2 of us for 2 nights. We used 2 out of 4 beds, didn't even go in one of the bedrooms and had very little footfall within the property. Certainly wouldn't be a £90 cleaning fee, but appreciate it's a common airbnb trick/loophole that hosts use to maximise income.
Also, the damage waiver that was mandatory was substantially more than the the figures quoted in the t&c's.

MeganBooking.comJun 2024
Dishonest service, unclean and unsafe.
Positive: Beautiful location, quirky property with original features fitting for Staithes. Spacious, too.
Negative: Filthy. A bird was trapped in the front room upon arrival and has messed everywhere. The floors, walls and soft furnishings were covered. We were told someone would come to sort it everyday but nobody ever came.
q80Booking.comMay 2024
Positive: The beds and bed linen were very good.
The kitchen facilities good although no tumble dryer as it stated.
Negative: Some of the house is very tired such as the bathroom. The shower won't move up and down and is ready for an upgrade, not really good enough considering the price we paid for 2 nights.
The bathroom floor was also very dirty
The front of the house steps were slippy and looked un loved with weeds around as was the small sitting area in the back.
GuestAirbnbMay 2024
Very large cottage for staithes. The basement kitchen is really bright with a lovely design. However it lacks a bit of équipement (oven gloves, bottle opener, condiments). The living space is very cosy. The bedrooms are spacious comfortable and nicely decorated. The bathroom is a bit dated but charming.
GuestAirbnbMay 2024
Great location in the heart of Staithes. Short walk to pubs and shops. Parking is at the top of the hill. The cottage had plenty of space for 2-4. Bedrooms all clean and tidy. Kitchen was pretty well equipped including a Nespresso; but no corkscrew! So we arrived Friday night and couldn’t open our bottle of wine. I did point this out to host and stay and was told they would get one dropped in the following day. But this didn’t happen. Which is disappointing. Also it would be a nice touch to at least get salt and pepper in the kitchen for guests.
