Ten minutes after we arrived at the cottage we heard noise outside, opened door and another family were trying to enter the property. It had been double booked, so we spent an hour trying contact someone to sort the problem. Not much help whatsoever. The other family managed to arrange somewhere else to stay thankfully. Wouldn’t recommend the place either, way too noisy until three in the morning minimum. Bed on the first floor was broken, the shower in the attic leaks down through the wall to the staircase. The windows were filthy.

Great central location. Not the quietest but very local to centre of Whitby. Glad didn’t take dog. Also parking we hired someone’s drive for the stay rather than street or NCP parking. If any mobility or fitness issues the internal stairs steep and narrow. Ideal for two adults and daughter. Nice toilet and shower attached to each bedroom. Lots of hot powerful water.

The location needs to be clearly stated...especially for anyone staying with children and plenty of luggage, the house is down an alleyway and not obvious from description. The house is in a great location for exploring Whitby and the bathrooms and shower are lovely. There was quite alot of noise especially on the Saturday night as there was a pub at the end of the alley. The 1st bed was awful and felt we couldn't move in it incase it would collapse and the downstairs is alot smaller than we thought. The bathrooms were done nicely with a really good shower. Anyone staying with children really needs to consider staying here due to the stairs, very steep. We had to stay in different bedrooms with the children incase they woke during the night as we didn't want them trying to walk the stairs by themselves. If your looking for something literally 23 steps from the main street in whitby this is perfect but we probably wouldn't stay again

We left early and found somewhere else to stay. The place was filthy, even after being forced to pay a £60 cleaning fee. Dirty walls, damp, smelly fridge, chipped walls, drainage problems and broken bed. Neighbours fighting next door, angry exchanges, plates smashing etc. Not a safe place for young children.

Comfortable, well-equipped, centrally situated. This accommodation suits 2 people plus dog rather than the 4 it sleeps as the kitchen/diner/sitting room is very compact. The stairs to the bedrooms are steep so not suitable for those who have mobility issues. Parking is nearby & you can easily drop off/collect luggage at the back end of the alley when that road is accessible.

i was very unhappy that I had to park in a unsafe area. on the overview of the property it stated that were was on premises parking and there was not. I was stressing so much about my car that I couldn't sleep and had to check on it all throughout my stay. the bedroom on the middle floor wasn't great. the bed felt broken and my partner didn't sleep well at all.

Lovely little cottage in a great location to town. Bear in mind you will need to park away from the cottage and carry your stuff a bit of a distance, we took hold alls but think if we'd have known this i would have taken wheeled suit cases. Once we got sorted realised the cottage is in a great location for the harbour, the bridge that crosses to the old town and to the bars and restaurants. The cottage decoration is lovely, and although it is small it was perfect for me, my husband and our dog. I would definitely return if i go back to Whitby.

Would not have booked this cottage if we had n a picture before we booked Positive: We liked the location Negative: Staircase very bad had a incident on the first night when I could not manage the stairs where the top stair turned which led to ringing paramedics for help as my husband could not get me up from the top stair as need a knee replacement my other friends had gone to bed so they could not help and.1 of them had just had a hip replacement if there had been a picture of the stairs we would not have booked

Location is brilliant and handy for us as we had a pram. There is a noticeable smell when you walk into the property, the place feels like it could do with a deep deep clean. There is a card to say it had been cleaned but difficult to see where this had taken place. We walked into a water problem from the top floor shower. Maybe a brief description of the steep stairs would be helpful for future guests to make sure it is for them especially when booking asks if any infants. Also elderly would not manage and the steepness was a surprise for us. Overall the cleanliness is lacking and I feel this let needs to have a better description before booking. We had an enjoyable stay just maybe a little blinkered to the environment around us.

The cottage is in an ideal location, everything is right on your door step but this makes it a little noisy on a night but didn’t affect our stay. The cottage is snug and I would say ideal for a couple, we did take the dog but I wouldn’t recommend..very steep stairs and no garden. The house overall was clean but definitely could be cleaner IE bathrooms and fridge and bed sheets..other than that I can’t complain for the price..only negative feedback I can provide. Perfect for a couple to get sometime away.

Grumbles cottage overall was lovely, if a little 'snug' for 4 adults. It was a little confusing when the Sat nav said we'd arrived as I didn't realise it was down an alley. I expected on road parking-maybe my not fully understanding the location, but we had to pay over £30 to park for the weekend. It was very clean, although paint a little chipped here and there. One of the beds was very comfy, the other (1st floor), was too soft for us. The bedrooms could also use some drawers, there is space, and the bathroom definitely needs shelves. The stairs are very steep and not for the faint hearted, although we knew that. Ideally placed for walking to town, although there was a little noise from local pubs. We ate at The Vault restaurant which was outstanding. Overall a lovely stay and would stay again.

Initially extremely disappointing and aggravating. Positive: Location of property is exceptional - close to harbour, extensive parking and numerous bars and restaurants Negative: The top floor room did not appear to have seen a cleaner for a long time, including what seemed like discarded knickers in the corner of the room! A suggested re-clean the following day provided little comfort - presumably we were supposed to share one bed with our friends on the first night!! - and therefore we purchased our own cleaning materials and cleaned the room ourselves.

I felt the location was brilliant. Quiet. and close to everything . The inside of the property was a little smaller than I thought. The stairs had not been hoovered in ages and were quite steep and uneven, especially at the top. had to go down sideways. would be good for a young couple with no pets. the description did not say there would be a back yard but I thought there would be. so no where for dogs to go, it's a back to back property with only the front door. The rest of the property was clean. it's suitable for a weekend break. I would go back but without the dog.

Good For A Short Stay Positive: Great location, well equipped for a short stay, good value for money. Negative: Smelt a bit fusty. Could be cleaner.

Positive: Location of cottage & it's facilities are fantastic, comfortable bed and clean bedding & linen provided. Whitby is a brilliant place to visit! Negative: 2nd bed was very unstable on 1st floor, really bad smell of dampness whenever you entered cottage, cleanliness of carpets and indoor window ledges were very poor.

Fantastic Positive: For a small cottage it packed a Hugh punch, you want for nothing. Negative: Having to come home

Disappointing Stay Positive: The location of the property was ideal. Really central, everything nearby. Negative: The cleanliness of the property was very disappointing. Carpets had not been hoovered, they were all really stained. Lots of dog hair around from previous guests. Bits of food on the floor. None of the plates, cutlery, mugs etc had been cleaned. Thick with dust everywhere and cobwebs on the ceilings. Mould in the bottom of the showers. The stairs were fairly dangerous, especially if you have a young child or are slightly more unsteady on your feet as they are very narrow and the steps at the top barely fits a foot on them. We nearly slipped down them a few times. The pub was very noisy with music into early hours of the morning and loud with drunk people down the alleyway of the accommodation. In the mornings from around 6am there was loud music blasting both days from what sounded like surrounding properties. The alleyway was full of dog foul so if you are down there, please be aware of that.

lovely place to stay and lovely surroundings with great restaurants/bars near by with groceries store less than 2 minute work. the whole place we stayed was lovely and I can't say anything bad about it

Charming cottage in great location

Great place in the centre of Whitby! Easy check in and out, really enjoyed the stay. Both rooms perfectly kitted out, looks like a recent renovation, everything very new.

Had a fantastic stay and the accommodation was excellent, it had everything you needed for a perfect stay away, it was like being at home away. And the sun shone. I would highly recommend and we will certainly be back

Positive: Grumbles Cottage was very cute, clean, good facilities and a fabulous location, right in the centre of town, near everything you need. The online staff were fantastic too. Negative: One of the beds was not as comfortable as the other and was a bit creaky, this was only a small issue as I am a light sleeper..

Great location in the centre of Whitby, perfect for our short stay and would definitely come back. Nicely decorated and had everything we needed. Host was quick to respond to any questions we had. It was a little difficult to find by car as the road is blocked with bollards until 4pm, so if you have an early check in you need to be aware of that, but the advantage was there is no traffic to worry about

Avoid this b&b Positive: Good location in the centre of Whitby & near car parks. Nice decor Negative: Sad to say but AVOID this company / b&b The apartment is perfect location but absolutely filthy , everything and I mean everything from blinds to shower heads and every piece of furniture is covered in dust. There was cobwebs and spiders handing from the stairs & stained bed sheets. Ontop of that the people who run it are the most unhelpful rude people I’ve ever had to deal with, cancelled our 3rd night without any communication/phone call and then said it was fully booked not 1 hour later when we said we wanted to stay, they wouldn’t let us move to another property despite owning and managing several within Whitby and wouldn’t let us cancel for free despite it being their fault. Check in 4pm and not a single minute earlier absolutely ridiculous when you have to beg for the key code I sent three texts in order to get the code. Borderline harassment with emails and texts about the property and things like booking a private chef, not needed. Also want extra money as a deposit when you check in - another con. Or you risk paying £500. If it was just the apartment (and it had been cleaned) and a key code to check in then I’d stay but the owners and the mess about is simply not worth it - they are not the only b&b in Whitby. I wish I’d listened to other reviews as I’m not the only negative one. AVOID.

great appartment and great hosts

Good location, could be brilliant but very poor cleanliness and bad water leak. Company unresponsive to complaints Positive: Good location with 2 en-suite bathrooms which is why we’d booked as two couples who wanted a private bathroom Negative: Very dirty on check in, we had to get the cleaners back and still was unclean. Carpets hasn’t been hoovered, stains all over them. Dust everywhere - one guest struggled with their allergies. Thick dust on every surface, hadn’t been wiped in weeks. Leak from third floor en suite (clearly not new as damp on walls and smelt of damp on check in), no one came to fix it and told not to use the shower - this is the reason why we’d booked 2 bathrooms! Opened complaint with company, nothing back since and that was over 1.5 weeks ago - very poor stay, given we had to clean the property ourselves and leaking through the ceiling from the third floor to the ground floor.

Good stay but minor things would make it better Positive: The property is in an excellent location and the fixtures and fittings are great, dont be put off by not having parking if you are willing to walk from up the back of the train station there are roads there that have no restriction on parking, having a scratch card for W parking at this accomodation would greatly help though. The beds are comfy and the showers are fab. NB if you are in the second floor bedroom take earplugs to save you cursing the pigeons, calling them vocal at 4am in the morning doesn't do them justice Negative: The apartment was clean if you didn't look too closely window sills etc had dead insects on them. Minor things but glasses could do with topping back up not 4 of each and the main window and door outside are badly in need of a clean don't be put of by this when you arrive inside is better. There were no toiletries although they are advertised and no coffee pods although on the Host and Stay confirmation it says you do get them ,very minor things I know

Perfect location in the heart of Whitby. Plenty of Pay & Display parking in the Marina Car Park.

Excellent home, very central very clean and tidy would definitely book again if in Whitby

The home was a great little space for those wanting to be in a prime Whitby location. Plenty of facilities within the kitchen and lovely light in the top-level bedroom from the windows. Maybe not the perfect location/space for us as guests, but pleasant all the same.

Great location, neat & comfortable home. Stairs are a bit tight. But everything else was well equipped. Really close to everything. Parking (paid) can be found near the harbor

Positive: Location was good nice power shower Negative: The cleanliness was diabolical awfl smell, urine stains on landing carpet, dust EVERYWHERE mould in shower and human hair in the bathroom corners, even the hairdryer was covered in dust, the 2 flight's of stairs are very steep and the loft bedroom which was a decent size was like living with the seagulls and pigeons, the photos are only a minimum of how dirty this property is

A very clean high spec cosy little cottage in the centre of Whitby, easy walking distance to all Whitby has to offer. Surprisingly quiet inside despite location - only downside was noisy pigeons on the roof during the night. We easily found on street parking nearby after unloading in the Railway station car park

This place is disappointing and unclean. The location is good, tucked away down a small alley, in a very central location, literally steps from Whitby harbour and town centre. On arrival it was immediately noticeable that the place was unloved. The whole property was really dusty, I mean dusty! It really wasn’t the cleanest place, as a ex-hotel inspector, I would rate it 2/5. Dusty, stained and dirty carpets, seating is dirty, cushions on the bed and sofa dirty, shower extractor thick in dust! Bed on the first floor needs replacing or at least sort the wobbly legs! The benches at the dining table wobble. The smoke detector in the top floor bedroom constantly beeps, makes for a great nights sleep! Not! The only real positive I can give the place is its location. However, that said, we still had a good couple of nights here. The place is up for sale and the owner has clearly lost interest and is not looking after it! Real shame, as it could be lovely. We wouldn’t return.

Great location, close to station, shops and the quay. The main room is compact - as described - but works well, and the bedrooms are more spacious, each with a very nice en-suite shower room.

We had a lovely stay! It's a nice house in a good location easy to get to the train station and the town centre. Comfortable beds, lots of sockets and a cosy sofa/dining area!

A lovely little cottage in a great central location. Very well equipped and stylish. Fab bathrooms and always good to have 2. Worth noting stairs are steep, and bed on the first floor not very comfy.

Lovely compact cottage in a convenient location. Positive: The cottage is beautifully decorated and clean. Negative: The outside area is rather grotty and could use a good sweep, not helped by the fact that the drain is totally blocked so water just runs off everywhere. The front door is straight onto the "throughfare" ( a very narrow path leading to Baxtergate). This wasn't that busy actually, you got the odd person walking past but overall not an issue. Stairs very steep.

had a fantastic stay, property is just as described, we came on train so just a stones throw from the train station, and everything on your doorstep from beach to bar to restaurant! loved it.

Great location

Perfect for access to the heart of Whitby Great little place, hosts were super quick at getting back to us and great at communicating. Loved the showers. No free parking close by however, so budget in some parking money. Also, 1st floor larger bed frame was wobbly, so favour the upstairs bedroom. Beautiful decor. Had everything we needed for a short stay.

Lovely cottage , shit company !! Positive: Central Negative: Paying a damage waiver of £250 then having to contact the property to ask for it to be refunded , took almost 3 weeks ! When I payed this it said would be refunded within 5-10 days! Then they had the cheek to only refund £240 , there was no damage to the property either , shocking after care they don’t give a shit once you have left the property, disgusting company , but will send you 4 emails asking for reviews!! AVOID !!!

Lovely, cosy and central location and lovely facilities Positive: The cottage was cosy and small. The furniture (2 chairs) were not a fab choice but dis the trick. The stairs were VERY steap and the 3rd step from the bottom was a little tricky. But all in all it wasn’t bad at all Negative: A plate was dirty and placed back in the cupboard (not the end of the world cos we just cleaned it). Stairs were slightly tricky. Nxt door bars were banging music til about 11pm (ish) the alley was a cut through for drinkers who could be noisy. The steps at the end was a place were drinkers who wanted to smoke gathered (some smoking illegal substances). But nothing too bad.

Great location with easy access to public parking

Nice property, great location but not clean! Positive: Loved the location and facilities. Bedrooms nice and big and lovely deco. Downstairs very small but was ok for us and does show on the photos so was aware of the size. Negative: This property was NOT clean, very disappointing to say that i paid a £60.00 cleaning fee and £40.00 service fee. Then i had to pay another £25.00 not refundable for a damage waiver!!!! If they are paying somebody to clean this property then i would have a word with them because it was not to a good standard. Also no parking unless you park miles away and find free parking, be aware that you will have to pay to park in the pay and display at £13.00 daily.

Positive: Location good and really clean. Negative: We were all cold during the stay. Not allowed to turn heating up. It rained all day and night that stay and when we got back in the evening we were all freezing....getting into a cold bed after being out in the rain is not nice. Check in isn't till 4pm....late really and check out 10am too early. Had to pay an extra £25 on top of the booking cost for insurance which was non refundable. It was that or pay I think £200 pound and the wording was.....we should get the money back within 2 weeks minus £10 admin. It would be easy once we had left for the owner to say any damage done and keep the money hence paid the £25....reluctantly

Great place, clean and everything you need for a good holiday.

Very disappointing & not as photos or description - Positive: central location Negative: property very badly damaged & dirty. Not as description or as photos - would not recommend unless numerous repairs & maintenance undertaken to the interior of this cottage. Street not very nice & dirty also. Don’t know why forced to pay accident waiver fee on top of cottage price when the property was so badly maintained & damaged on our arrival. Trying to get refund as did not stay for full duration due to poor standards. Would not recommend!

Wonderful stay, great location, easy check in Could do with a lick of paint in areas and the shower tray didn’t drain meaning water went through the ceiling. However host responded really quick

Great place to stay! Perfect location literally a few minutes walking distance to everything. Only downside was the parking however we got lucky to park at the train station for the duration of our trip (although it cost us £30 for the whole time).

This property was fabulous, it was in walking distance of shops and parking, it is beautifully decorated and the layout of the property works well. We had a lovely stay.
