The area

Whitby is a charming seaside town on the stunning North Yorkshire coast, famous for its dramatic clifftop abbey ruins, historic harbour, and atmospheric streets that inspired Bram Stoker's Dracula.

Rich in maritime heritage, the town offers visitors a blend of sandy beaches, quaint fishing traditions, and a thriving food scene renowned for its fresh seafood. Whitby's cobbled old town is filled with independent shops, galleries, and tea rooms, while the 199 steps leading up to Whitby Abbey provide breathtaking views over the coastline.

Beyond the town, visitors can explore the wild beauty of the North York Moors National Park, with its rolling heather landscapes, picturesque villages like Goathland and Grosmont, and miles of scenic walking and cycling trails.

Nearby coastal gems such as Robin Hood’s Bay, Sandsend, and Staithes offer their own unique character and charm, perfect for day trips. Whether you're seeking history, outdoor adventure, or a relaxing break by the sea, Whitby and its surrounding area offer an unforgettable experience all year round.

Whitby Train Station is conveniently located in the heart of the town centre, just a short five-minute walk from Captain's View. The station offers direct rail services to a range of destinations across Northern England, including Middlesbrough, Thornaby-on-Tees, Stockton-on-Tees, Billingham, Hartlepool, Seaham, Sunderland, Newcastle upon Tyne, Blaydon, Prudhoe, and Hexham.

Whitby is also the eastern terminus of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, where visitors can enjoy a nostalgic journey aboard heritage steam and diesel trains to the historic market town of Pickering, passing through charming countryside villages such as Goathland, Grosmont, and Levisham.

In addition to rail connections, Whitby benefits from a network of bus routes providing services to Guisborough, Leeds, Loftus, Malton, Middlesbrough, Scarborough, and York, making it well connected for both local and regional travel.

For those arriving by car, Whitby is easily accessible via the A171 from Scarborough or Middlesbrough, or the scenic A169 route from Pickering.
Whether arriving by train, bus, or car, Whitby provides an excellent base from which to explore the stunning North Yorkshire coastline, and the surrounding North York Moors National Park.

“Great location and opposite the (small) car park which was great. Close to Flowergate and all the pubs but not great if you have someone who can’t do hills. Luckily my 87 year old mum is fit as a fiddle but even she found the upward climb tough! The apartment is great, the main bedroom is lovely and big but the second bedroom is small but adequate. No natural daylight in the sitting room and kitchen but the bathroom was great. The entrance hall downstairs really lets the first impressions down hugely though as it smells of damp and the carpet is filthy with mud and what I can only imagine is a bit of dog mess. It either needs to be pulled up and laminated or professionally cleaned.”

“Great little place and ideal location with a reasonably priced car park nearby. Right next to several pubs, bars and shops and a couple of minutes to be on the beach front. We didn't need both bedrooms, so chose the largest one, with a partial view of the Abbey ruins as a bonus. The living room was small & cosy and the kitchen included a dishwasher (we did use) and a washing machine (we didn't). The bathroom was superbly clean and the shower was excellent with plenty of room. I'd certainly consider staying here again, next time I'm in Whitby.”
