Gardiner Retreat is a welcoming ranch-style home with three bedrooms and one bathroom, set on a quiet cul-de-sac between Gardiner and New Paltz, New York, at the foot of the Shawangunk Ridge.

The home is an easy single level layout, perfect for your group. Wood floors run throughout, and the open kitchen and living room sit side by side, so whoever is cooking can stay part of the conversation. The living room has a Smart TV for streaming, a bench by the bay window, and a collection of board games for slow evenings with family and friends.

The kitchen is fully equipped with stainless steel appliances, an oven with two independent heating zones, a dishwasher, an air fryer, a toaster oven, a blender, a food processor, and a kettle. A coffee station with both a drip coffee maker and a Keurig makes mornings easy.

Gardiner Retreat sleeps 7 guests across three bedrooms. Just off the entry hall, the bunk room has a full-over-twin bunk bed and two closets, a fun setup for kids. Past the living room, two more bedrooms each have a queen bed, one with two large barn-door closets. An air mattress is also available for an extra guest.

The full bathroom sits between the two queen bedrooms and features a tub and shower combo with glass sliding doors and tile surrounds.

The detached game room is where the group comes together. Set in a converted garage, it has a ping pong table, a dartboard, a TV with Roku, and a pellet stove that keeps the space warm through the colder months, with pellets provided.

Outside, the private yard is made for easy afternoons or evenings. A stone patio in the back has a Weber charcoal grill and Adirondack chairs, and down a gentle slope, a fire pit is ringed with more Adirondack chairs for evenings under the stars. A raised vegetable garden bed adds a homey touch, and two bikes are stored in the shed, ready for a ride on the Wallkill Valley Rail Trail just five minutes away.

Window A/C units and ceiling fans keep the bedrooms comfortable in summer, and a brand new LG washer and dryer, Wi-Fi, a dedicated workspace, and a Pack ‘n Play round out the amenities. Downtown New Paltz, Mohonk Preserve, and Minnewaska State Park are all within 20 minutes. Gardiner Retreat is a comfortable, fun-filled home base for families and friends exploring the Hudson Valley.

The area

Gardiner Retreat sits on a quiet cul-de-sac between Gardiner and New Paltz, about 10 minutes from downtown New Paltz and its shops, cafés, and restaurants, and the stone houses of Historic Huguenot Street.

Grab the bikes from the shed and ride the Wallkill Valley Rail Trail, just 5 minutes away. Hikers can climb the Shawangunk Ridge at Mohonk Preserve, about 14 minutes from the house, or swim and hike at Minnewaska State Park Preserve, about 18 minutes away. Both are world class cross country ski destinations in the winter.

In Gardiner, sample local spirits at Tuthilltown Spirits or a glass of wine at Whitecliff Vineyard. In late summer and fall, pick apples and berries at the orchards and farm stands that line the back roads.

For a change of pace, Rosendale and High Falls are each about 20 minutes away, with more to explore like Rosendale's historic theater and Darlings restaurant, and Ollies Pizza in High Falls.

Gardiner Retreat is just over 2 hours from New York City. A car is essential for getting here and exploring the area. The main access route is the New York State Thruway (I-87) to the New Paltz exit. The driveway is plowed in winter, but we recommend a 4x4 or all-wheel-drive vehicle in snowy conditions.

Notes from your host

Dogs are welcome. The paved driveway offers parking for up to four cars. Please bring your own charcoal for the grill. This is bear country, so please use the bear-proof bin for garbage in the warmer months and keep all food indoors.

This home does not have central AC, but each of the 3 bedrooms has either a window unit or a standing AC unit.
